Best Takeaway Mexican in Melbourne

Mexican cuisine is true all-weather food. In summer, there’s nothing better than knocking back a few fish tacos with a Margarita or cerveza in-hand. In winter, when comfort is a priority, Mexican food’s winning combo of carbs and sinus-clearing spice is tough to beat. Then there’s the added bonus that many of Mexico’s most famous dishes – tacos, burritos, et al – are an inherently good fit for takeaway (we have our friend, the tortilla, to thank for that user-friendliness).

Many of Melbourne’s Mexican restaurants are kicking on with the takeaway and delivery options that made them a lockdown hit. These are our favourites.

This taqueria and bottle shop has steadily expanded its takeaway offering since lockdown became a regular thing last year. The burritos and churros are particular highlights. And while you’re at, be sure to order some horchata to drink. Order here.

La Tortilleria

La Tortilleria’s menu is more like what you’d find in Los Angeles or Mexico than many of Melbourne’s other Mexican restaurants. The hand-made tortillas are the star of the show here, vessels for the myriad toppings – slow-cooked pork, chicken, fish and more – and salsas. And Taco Tuesdays are still very much a thing, where it’s just $12 for three. Order here.

Los Hermanos Mexican Taqueria

The tacos and gorditas here are the real deal. Owner Bruno Carreto was born in Mexico and did a stint in a taqueria there before opening Los Hermanos. Be sure to add on some churros for dessert. Order here for pick-up, or you can find Los Hermanos on most major delivery platforms.

Radio Mexico

A lot of Radio Mexico’s charm comes from its location, it’s just off St Kilda beach. But this taqueria’s popular lockdown takeaway era proved it hadn’t been coasting by on its looks. You can still get build-your-own taco sets, cook-at-home meals (including a range of slow-cooked meats) and of course, Margaritas. We’d go for the one litre flagon. It’s $60, and pours six Margaritas. That’s a good deal.

Hello José

This West Melbourne taqueria has kept up its solid takeaway offering. The multifarious taco menu includes Baja-style battered-fish tacos, carnitas and vegan chorizo. Village Cantina

Who needs Taco Tuesday when you can have Burrito Thursday and Nacho Sunday? Sure, they don’t roll off the tongue as well, but the deals speak for themselves. At Village, a big bowl of nachos is $10 on Sundays. The Thursday deal is even better: two burritos for $20 (they’re also very large). It’s backed up by a menu filled with favourites such as churros, croquetas, and plenty of tacos. Takeaway is available locally, delivery via the major platforms.

The Black Toro

The menu here isn’t especially authentic – e.g. fried chicken and Wagyu sliders – but it’s not thoughtless fusion, either. Order here for creative spins on tacos and tostadas. Or go large with lamb shoulder barbacoa or a crispy 600g pork hock coated in guajilo chilli caramel.

The Happy Mexican

This Hoddle Street taqueria is known for its excellent, generously stacked tacos: with pork al pastor and charred pineapple; slow cooked birria; and deep-fried flathead with cabbage slaw and chipotle mayo. Get those, along with ceviche tostadas and California-style burritos (or burrito bowls), washed down with house-made agua fresca. Order pickup here.
