If you’re looking for a date night destination in Byron Bay, Supernatural delivers on all fronts. In fact, if you’re not in Byron but willing to jump on a plane for a perfectly intimate evening, it could be worth it.

Tucked between restaurants on a buzzy laneway just back from Byron’s Main Beach, the low-lit space has an undeniable air of Europe about it. “A slice of Paris by the sea” was the line that persuaded photographer Jodi Plumbley, who bought Supernatural with her partner Grant Weatherburn in April 2021, to take on the space. Under Plumbley’s eccentric, romantic reign, the former Supernatural Cellars (founded by winemaker Pete Windrim and restaurateur Andy Love) has a distinct Parisian accent.

Tinted mirrors line the walls, reflecting back candlelit tables littered with plates of carefully prepared French cuisine and cocktails served in vintage glassware from Plumbley’s personal collection. Local rock oysters come doused in zesty vinegar with pickled shallots, and the beetroot cured salmon is served with delicately piped pillows of whipped feta.

Seasonally inspired desserts join the menu on rotation, but it’s the 10-page drinks menu that has gained Supernatural its reputation. Originally a natural wine bar (hence the name), Jodi and Grant have extended the menu to include beers, liqueurs and a cocktail list that’s creative but refined. Standouts include a smooth Negroni made with blood orange gin, and an Americano spiked with Fernet-Branca.

If you come alone, take a seat at the bar and the team might offer you its vintage writing set to pen a love letter to a fellow diner, should the supernatural romance get the better of you.
