From weddings to black-tie events, Shayne Tino shares his approach to dressing well for any occasion. In partnership with Politix, he breaks down capsule wardrobe essentials and fabrics that balance polish with comfort.

There’s no longer a defined “event season”. Weddings, black-tie galas, milestone birthdays and long celebratory lunches are now scattered across the calendar – which means dressing for the occasion has become a year-round consideration. While dress codes still call for polish, modern event-dressing requires something more nuanced than stiff formality.

To help navigate it all, we spoke with Shayne Tino, an Australian creative working across men’s fashion and culture. Known for his sharp yet relaxed approach to tailoring, Tino believes modern event-dressing should feel effortless rather than rigid. From building a streamlined capsule wardrobe to mastering small styling details, here’s his guide to dressing well for events year-round.

Start with a hero piece

According to Tino, the easiest way to simplify event-dressing is to begin with one standout item and build the rest of the outfit around it.

“I think people tend to overcomplicate it,” he says. “For me, it starts with choosing one strong hero piece – a great jacket, a well-cut suit or a sharp coat – and letting everything else support that. Once you have that anchor, the rest of the look naturally falls into place.”

Understand the dress code

Navigating dress codes needn’t be intimidating. Tino suggests thinking about formality on a spectrum.

“Cocktail dressing is really tailoring with a slightly more relaxed edge,” he says. “That’s where you can introduce colour, experiment with texture or play with subtle details like satin lapels.” Skipping the tie can also help soften the look while keeping it polished.

Black tie, however, is a different proposition. “That’s much cleaner and sharper. It’s about precision, restraint and leaning into a more classic sense of elegance.”

Choose fabrics that work year-round

Fabric plays a major role in how an event outfit looks and performs throughout the night.

“I tend to gravitate towards wool and wool blends because they hold their shape beautifully and always feel premium,” says Tino. “They’re versatile across seasons and easy to style.”

He also points to new fabric technologies that make tailoring easier to wear and travel with. “Politix, for example, has non-crease travel fabrics that you can pack straight into a suitcase without worrying about wrinkles. You can throw them on and still get that structured, polished look.”

Prioritise comfort and movement

Looking sharp is important, but feeling comfortable in your clothes is just as crucial – especially at long events.

“When your clothes move well and feel comfortable, you stop worrying about how they’re sitting,” says Tino. “That ease naturally builds confidence.

“If you can sit, dance and move around the room comfortably, you’re able to enjoy the event rather than thinking about your outfit the whole time.”

Keep colour tonal

When it comes to colour, Tino recommends building outfits around tonal palettes.

“I like starting with grounded neutrals and letting texture create the interest,” he says.

In winter, that might mean richer tones like deep navy or dark brown. In warmer months, he shifts towards lighter shades such as beige, soft greens or touches of white – while keeping the overall palette cohesive.

Build a small event capsule

A handful of reliable pieces can cover most formal occasions.

“I’d start with a really strong jacket – that’s the foundation of most event looks,” says Tino. “Something with a bit of character, like satin lapels or sharp tailoring, can instantly elevate an outfit.”

From there, he recommends a well-cut pair of trousers, a crisp shirt – black or white – and a single pair of quality dress shoes. “With those pieces in place, you can mix and match while still keeping everything polished.”

Use small details to elevate a look

Often the difference between a good outfit and a great one comes down to subtle styling choices.

“This is where you can add personality,” says Tino. “It might be a statement shirt with a subtle print or colour, or details like a pocket square or distinctive tie.”

Even small tailoring tweaks can have a big impact. “Altering your trouser length so it sits neatly above the shoe can instantly sharpen the whole look.”

Invest in versatile pieces

For Tino, the best event pieces are those that work beyond the event.

“I always look for something that can be worn more than once,” he says. “Pieces that move easily between dinners, weddings and everyday settings without losing their edge.”

If something only works for one occasion, he says it may not be worth the investment. “If it doesn’t offer that kind of versatility, it’s probably not a smart buy.”

Look to fabric innovation

One of the biggest shifts in modern tailoring is happening in fabric technology.

“Brands are experimenting with materials that don’t crease and require little to no ironing,” says Tino. “You can pack a suit into a backpack, pull it out and wear it straightaway without needing to steam it.”

These developments are changing how tailoring fits into everyday life. “It’s not just about how it looks anymore. It’s about how it moves, travels and works with the way we live.”

Dress with intention

If Tino had to offer one piece of advice, it would be simple.

“Dress with intention. Choose one strong hero piece and keep everything else refined around it. The best event looks don’t shout – they just feel confident and considered.”
